Jan. 29, 2015 – A draft of a study investigating bike sharing and ways to make bicycling the priority on selected residential streets in Oak Park is scheduled for public review next month.
Recommendations from the Active Transportation Alliance will be reviewed by the Plan Commission on Feb. 5 and by the Transportation Commission on Feb. 23. Input gathered at these public meetings will be incorporated into an updated plan that will be presented to the Village Board.
Central to the Feb. 23 Transportation Commission discussion will be possible locations for 12 docking stations as Chicago’s popular Divvy bike sharing program prepares to expand into Oak Park. Commissioners want to hear what residents have to say about the locations before finalizing any recommendations.

This latest study will add to Oak Park’s first major effort to increase bicycle use and to make the Village more bicycle friendly. That far-reaching plan, developed in 2008, called for making sure bicyclists’ needs were considered in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of all Village streets.
The 2008 plan also called for creating a network that would place every Oak Park resident and destination within two blocks of an east-west and a north-south bikeway. The network would include bike boulevards that use infrastructure to calm and reduce vehicle traffic on neighborhood streets and improve safety at busy intersections.
Both the Plan Commission and Transportation Commission meet at 7 p.m. in Village Hall, 123 Madison St. Check the Village website calendar for meeting agendas and possible time changes.
