May 24, 2014 - The Village of Oak Park’s Sculpture Walk is poised to return for a third season on June 1. This year the outdoor event will take place in the Hemingway District, with most art installations located along Oak Park Avenue from Lake Street south to Pleasant Street. The exhibit will spotlight 12 pieces of art from established sculptors and emerging newcomers installed in pedestrian-friendly sites in Oak Park.
Artists were selected for the Sculpture Walk following a juried competition. Sculptures in the exhibit are constructed from a variety of materials, including steel, bronze, fiberglass, recycled objects and stained glass. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a brochure – available online in June at www.oak-park.us/sculpturewalk and at the Oak Park Visitors’ Center, 1010 Lake St. -- and explore the installations with a self-guided walking tour.
“Public art helps to elevate the quality of life in the places we share, and in recent years has really blossomed to include light and sound sculptures, mosaics, murals and a wide variety of street art,” said Elaine Miller, a commissioner on the Public Art Advisory Council, which organized the Sculpture Walk. “We hope the sculptures exhibited will challenge and inspire the community.”
Organizers are particularly excited about four site-specific installations, which will incorporate Oak Park’s natural and built environment into the art itself. They will be displayed along with eight freestanding sculptures.
The Sculpture Walk will be open to visitors through Sept. 21. After the event closes, the Village of Oak Park may consider purchasing a piece of art to be permanently installed in a public space in the Village.
The Sculpture Walk is organized by the Public Art Advisory Commission, a group of citizen volunteers that promotes the acquisition and placement of public art that reflects diversity and artistic expression and enhances the aesthetic environment of the Village.
