Oak Park Police welcome two new commanders

June 9, 2014 - Two veteran law enforcement professionals have been sworn in as the Oak Park Police Department’s newest commanders.

Following an introduction by Chief Rick Tanksley, Michael Richardson and Joseph Waitzman were sworn in by the Village Clerk during a June 9 ceremony at Village Hall. Friends, family and their fellow police officers congratulated them on their achievement.

As a 26-year law enforcement veteran, Cmdr. Richardson served as a 911 telecommunicator with the River Forest Police Department before joining the Oak Park Police Department in 1988. His roles here have included patrol officer, field training officer, internal affairs supervisor and detective sergeant. He has a degree from Benedictine University and graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Staff and Command.

Cmdr. Waitzman arrived in Oak Park recently following a 26-year law enforcement career in Country Club Hills, Rolling Meadows and the Illinois Secretary of State’s office. His experience includes various command-level responsibilities. Waitzman graduated from the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University’s School of Staff and Command and has degrees from the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University.

“Cmdr. Richardson and Cmdr. Waitzman will provide leadership and professionalism to the officers under their command,” Tanksley said. “Together, their sense of duty is a great fit for Oak Park.”
