Oak Park Police stepping up traffic enforcement for holiday

June 16, 2022 - The Oak Park Police Department is stepping up traffic enforcement around the July 4th holiday, focusing on impaired and unbuckled drivers.

The safety campaign is underway now and will run through July 5 to include the summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day.

“It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use marijuana or other drugs,” said Interim Police Chief Shatonya Johnson. “Our officers will be working around the clock to keep impaired drivers off the road and enforce all other traffic laws.”

The Oak Park Police will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.

To keep your 4th of July celebrations safe, plan ahead by designating a sober driver, not driving distracted and always wearing your seat belt. Other important tips include:

  • Designate a sober driver and give them your keys before you go out.
  • If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, or call a family member to get you home safely.
  • Use your favorite ride-share service or use public transportation.
  • Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, it’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, Drive High Get a DUI and Click It or Ticket campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The crackdown runs with a media campaign reminding motorists that impaired driving has “Life or Death” consequences.
