Aug. 27, 2015 – Investigations into a two-month-long string of daytime residential burglaries in Oak Park have culminated in the arrest of two Chicago men.
Jovanni Vargas, 20, of the 1100 block of north Massasoit Avenue, and Dalast Anderson, 22, of the 3500 block of west Huron Street, have been charged in connection with 17 burglaries in June and July, where a wide range of personal property was taken.
Police tracked down Vargas and Anderson after physical evidence connected them to the crimes. Both men, who were already on parole for residential burglary, later confessed their involvement in the Oak Park burglaries. They are being held in Cook County Jail awaiting trial dates.
The pair concentrated on Oak Park’s older, multi-unit buildings with open and accessible rear stairwells or unsecured vestibule doors. The incidents occurred between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when residents were away.
“Burglaries typically represent about 20 percent of crime in our community. As these arrests illustrate, solving one case often can lead to solving multiple, similar crimes,” said Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley.
Tanksley credited the work of the department’s investigators who used what he called “proven, fundamental police procedures and techniques” to connect Vargas and Dalast to the burglaries and ultimately to their arrest.
“These types of crimes speak to the importance of properly securing buildings to protect occupants from unauthorized access,” Tanksley added. “Career criminals are always on the lookout for opportunities to ply their illegal trades. The harder we can make it for them to find opportunities here, the more likely they will look elsewhere.”
