May 22, 2015 - Oak Park Police will be out in force day and night during Memorial Day weekend looking for impaired and unbuckled drivers as part of a statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket enforcement effort.
The intensified enforcement began on May 11 and will continue through May 25. Efforts will focus on late-night hours when statistics show a disproportionate number of traffic deaths occur that involve drunk drivers and unbuckled motorists.
“Memorial Day weekend traditionally kicks off the busy summer driving season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” said Oak Park Deputy Chief Anthony Ambrose. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone, front or back seat, who is not wearing a seat belt.”
During statewide surveys conducted by IDOT in 2014, the overall usage rate for rear-seat occupants was 84 percent, versus 94.1 percent for drivers and front-seat passengers. Provisional statistics indicate that there were 12 fatalities on Illinois roadways during last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
To avoid a potential crash or an arrest for driving under the influence, the Oak Park Police Department recommends designating a sober driver and not letting friends or family members drive drunk or impaired. Other important tips include:
The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
