Aggravated criminal sexual abuse charges filed

Feb. 9, 2015 - A 27-year-old Chicago man has been charged in connection with assaulting two women and a juvenile in two separate incidents the afternoon of Fri., Feb. 6.

Richard E. Harris of the 3000 block of West Lexington Avenue was charged Saturday with robbery, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Bond was set at $400,000.

In the first incident, which occurred about 2:35 p.m. in the 300 block of North Euclid Avenue, the suspect approached a 43-year-old Oak Park woman, attempted to engage her in conversation, then knocked her to the ground, battered her and took her cell phone. The victim fought back and the suspect fled the scene.

The second incident, which occurred at about 2:55 p.m. in the alley of the 200 block of South Elmwood Avenue, involved a 41-year-old Oak Park woman and her 5-year-old daughter. The victim told police the suspect got her attention by saying, “hi,” then picked up her daughter and touched her inappropriately over her clothing. The suspect then released the juvenile and knocked the victim to the ground. The victim also fought back and the suspect fled the scene.

Using the description provided by the victims, Police apprehended Harris in the 400 block of Pleasant Street within minutes after the second incident was reported. The victims in both incidents said their assailant said he had a gun, but no weapon was displayed or found, according to investigators.

Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley praised the victims for their bravery and helping the police to quickly apprehend the suspect.

“Fighting back can be risky, but sometimes it is necessary in situations such as these,” Tanksley said. “By standing up to their attacker both vocally and physically, these brave women were able to escape a very bad situation and alert police. They acted as they felt they should under the circumstances and the outcome was a positive one.”

More information will be released as it becomes available.
