April 22, 2019 - The Village of Oak Park is recognizing the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program during National Community Development week from April 22-26.
The week-long celebration involves community development funders, recipients of grant funds and beneficiaries of services by recognizing and showcasing the program, which assists low-income residents.
In the most recently completed program year, Oak Park CDBG funds assisted more than 32,000 people. From direct hunger relief and domestic violence services to ADA-compliant crosswalks and family support, the federal funds are allocated locally to activities that have a direct impact on the community.
For more than 40 years, the CDBG program has provided communities with an important source of funds to address affordable housing and community and economic development needs. The CDBG program provides grants to over 1,200 local governments to create neighborhood approaches that improve the physical, economic and social conditions in communities.
Every $1 of CDBG leverages more than $4 in other funding, bringing additional vital resources to communities. For program year 2019, which runs from October 2019 through to September 2020, the Village will receive more than $1.6 million in CDBG funds, the sixth-highest amount among communities in Illinois.
This program is administered nationally by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and is needed more than ever to help vulnerable citizens and improve the overall condition of neighborhoods.
A rigorous application process managed each year by professional Village staff and the Community Development Citizens Advisory Commission (CDCAC) determines how the money is allocated.
Staff and commission volunteers review all grant applications and make recommendations to the Village Board, which makes the final decisions on funding allocations.
