Oct. 20, 2016 - Oak Park residents have one last opportunity this year to safely dispose of unwanted electronic items now banned from landfills.
The final electronics recycling event of 2016 will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 29 at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd.
Just about any kind of electronic item will be accepted, including computers, peripherals, laptops, monitors, TVs, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, printers, fax machines, MP3 players, portable digital assistants, video game consoles, video cassette recorders/players, video disk players, zip drives, scanners and microwaves. Crews will be on hand to help with unloading.
Residents also can recycle used books during the last electronics recycling event of the season. Books of all kinds in any condition will be accepted.
The Oak Park Public Library has suspended accepting donations of materials until 2017. Donations of books that would normally be made to the Library are welcome at the recycling event at the Public Works Center.
Options are available for residents who are not able to drop off unwanted electronic items Oct. 29. Most electronic equipment also is accepted at the Chicago Household Chemical and Electronics Recycling Facility, at 1150 N. North Branch St. The facility is open from 7 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, 2 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Saturday of the month.
Providing opportunities for residents to recycle electronics is essential, officials say, since the state banned these items from landfills in 2012 and waste haulers no longer will pick them up with garbage.
