Construction closes part of Chicago Avenue

May 26, 2016 - Construction is underway for a sewer and street repair project that will cause closures along Chicago Avenue for much of the summer.

Crews began working today on the first phase of the project, which involves replacing sewer mains under a two-block stretch from Ridgeland Avenue to Scoville/Fair Oaks Avenue. During construction, Chicago Avenue will be completely closed from Ridgeland Avenue to Scoville/Fair Oaks.

All through traffic on Chicago Avenue will be detoured to Division Street via Oak Park Avenue and Ridgeland Avenue. Local traffic will be allowed on Chicago Avenue from Oak Park Avenue to Scoville/Fair Oaks Avenue.

Officials estimate the first phase of the project will take at least four weeks. Chicago Avenue will be reopened to traffic for Memorial Day weekend and then remain closed for the remainder of the project.

Once the first phase is complete, work will immediately begin on the second phase, which involves a similar sewer main replacement on a two-block stretch of Chicago Avenue between Grove and Forest avenues. During the second phase, Chicago Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Harlem Avenue to Oak Park Avenue.

According to officials, the water mains being repaired are more than 100 years old and in need of replacement.

The third phase of the project involves street resurfacing along Chicago Avenue from Harlem Avenue to Austin Boulevard, spanning the entire stretch of the Village. The resurfacing project is being led by the Illinois Department of Transportation, and Village officials made it a priority to complete the sewer main replacements before resurfacing begins in late summer.
