Sept. 3, 2019 –The Village of Oak Park is taking part in National Preparedness Month throughout September and encouraging residents to be “prepared, not scared” in the event of an emergency.
Organized by the Ready Campaign and FEMA, National Preparedness Month aims to increase preparedness throughout the U.S. by urging households, businesses and communities to prepare and plan for emergencies.
This year’s “Prepared, Not Scared” theme features a focus on an array of topics throughout the month such as planning financially for the possibility of a disaster, making an emergency plan, teaching youth to prepare for disasters and ways to get involved in local preparedness efforts.
The Oak Park Fire Department will be amplifying these messages by sharing regular posts on its new Facebook page related to National Preparedness Month throughout September.
Oak Park residents interested in community-wide emergency planning are encouraged to volunteer with the Village’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) or Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The MRC unit is seeking both medical and non-medical volunteers ready to help with logistical planning, records keeping, health awareness campaigns, staffing first-aid stations, providing emergency care, distributing medication and vaccinating residents in emergency situations.
CERT volunteers are trained and equipped to play a vital role in local disaster response and recovery activities. Prospective CERT volunteers must complete a three-day training course on first aid, basic firefighting, search and rescue, and other emergency response techniques.
Both units meet bimonthly. Multiple training opportunities are offered, some with continuing education credits.
